Disclaimer: Just a bit of fun, not for profit.
It happens like everything always happens with the Doctor. Danger! World’s gonna end! Oh my! Let’s go pretend to be people we’re not so we can get in the know. So while Amy is interviewing patients and the Doctor is talking to the bloke with the cane, Rory gets to be a nurse from Saskatchewan.
“But it’s a blank piece of paper! Look at it! You’re a doctor! You’re supposed to be smart!” Rory tries after the doctor – Wilson – tries to engage him in yet another conversation about stage three lymphoma in patients under three years of age. Dr. Wilson is apparently not that smart, or not that psychic. Rory hates it when the paper deliberately leaves him out of the loop.
“So what do you do when your patients aren’t dying?” Rory abruptly asks before Wilson can pull out a patient’s file. “Uh, I mean. You know. For fun? I mean, to get away from all this hospital business?” To emphasize his point, Rory looks at the door.
He cringes for moment when Dr. Wilson looks at a Rubik’s Cube lying on his desk, but his hopes soar when the doctor finally answers, “Lunch?”
Rory grins. “That sounds all right.”
He’s half out of his chair when the door bursts open. “Lunch!” the intruder exclaims. “You can’t go to lunch with him! You promised me we could eat together.”
Rory sits back down. His hopes are once again crushed. Amy was probably having a plate full of hot chips right now.
“House,” Dr. Wilson asks in a tone that hadn't appeared when he'd spoken with Rory. “Were you eavesdropping?”
“No," Dr. House answers, "I was hiding from that weird librarian with the bow tie. He’s been chatting me up all day. Frankly, the man can’t take a hint. I told him my heart already belonged to you, Jimmy.” The way he bats his eyelashes both impresses and disturbs Rory. “Now drop this heathen and buy me lunch.”
Dr. Wilson looks to Rory apologetically. “House. This is Nurse Williams.”
“Nurse, hmm?” Dr. House leans in and Rory thinks he may be one of those doctors who diagnose you from the health of your eye mucus. He leans back and places his hand in front of his mouth so that he can stage whisper to Dr. Wilson, “Where’s the naughty nurse uniform? The breasts? The blonde hair? I think they sent you the wrong one!”
“House. This is a colleague. Like I was going to say, this is Nurse Williams of the Saskatchewan Teaching Hospital. He’s specializing in pediatric cancer. Rory, this is Dr. House. He’s head of Diagnostics. Ignore him.”
“Pleased to meet you,” Rory says out of politeness, feeling more intimidated than pleased. He feels more intimidated when Dr. House points his cane at Rory and demands to know what Rory wants with Wilson. Rory doesn't want anything with Dr. Wilson.
“Lies! You came in with that strange librarian and the hot red-head with the killer legs.”
That hot red-head with the killer legs is Rory's fiancé, Rory informs him as he rises out of his chair.
“You’re a nurse! You don’t get hot red-heads that wear skirts like that. You get the stuffy librarians.”
Rory doesn't want the stuffy librarian. Dr. House somehow connects this to Rory trying to snatch up Dr. Wilson, but Rory insists that he doesn't want Dr. Wilson, either. When Dr. House asks Rory what it is he does want, Rory shouts, “Lunch!”
In the awkward silence that follows, he clears his throat and sits back down. More quietly, he continues. "I just want some lunch, before the weird stuff starts happening and I have to start running. I hate running on an empty stomach."
"Weird stuff?" Dr. House asks.
“Lunch sounds fine," Dr. Wilson says at the same time. Rory is much more inclined to pursue Dr. Wilson's train of thought.
The sandwich is halfway to Rory's mouth when the fire alarm rings. He groans and sighs, but isn't surprised. While everyone is reacting to the commotion, he slips away quietly to rejoin Amy and The Doctor – but not before wrapping the sandwich in a napkin and taking it with him.
